1. What Is a Barcode Quiet Zone?

A Quiet Zone (also known as the margin or clear area) is the blank, unprinted space surrounding a barcode on both the leading and trailing edges.

Without an adequate quiet zone, an optical scanner's photodetector cannot establish a baseline light reflection level before reading the first bar pattern. This causes the scanner to mistake surrounding graphics, package text, or label edges for bars, resulting in a failed scan.
